Where ancestral knowledge and science come together to protect life
Deep in the Amazon and other biodiverse regions of Colombia, The Community Forests stands out as one of the country’s most solid and meaningful strategies for community-led conservation. Guided by more than 30 Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, this initiative protects the territory by merging ancestral knowledge with environmental science and monitoring.
These communities—legitimate guardians of the rainforest—lead the initiative. Their worldview, expressed in over 15 living languages, shapes every decision. Here, the forest is not a resource: it is home, culture, and future.
The Community Forests currently protects over 2.5 million hectares of native forest and has prevented the emission of more than 28.5 million tonnes of CO₂, through internationally validated projects and ongoing monitoring. But its true strength lies in the balance it strikes between two worlds: traditional wisdom and contemporary science.
Ancestral knowledge is interwoven with advanced technology, satellite monitoring, REDD+ methodologies, and innovative financing mechanisms such as biodiversity and carbon credits—an integrated effort to protect not only ecosystems, but life itself in all its forms.

This architecture is made possible by the collaboration of three key partner organizations:

Yet the true driving force is the communities themselves. They don’t simply participate—they decide. They’re not beneficiaries—they’re leaders. From the Monochoa Indigenous Reserve in Caquetá to the mangroves of Chocó, their voices and practices sustain a regenerative vision of the territory that now stands as a global example of climate action with deep roots and a human face.
The Community Forests doesn’t just protect the forest: it cultivates dignity, strengthens governance, and reimagines the future from within the territory.
